Úna Burke was born and brought up in a small village called Knockvicar in the west of Ireland. Graduating from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2003, with a BA in Fashion Design, Úna worked alongside designers Philip Treacy, Helen Cody, Edmond Chesneau and with the fashion companies; Burberry, Radley, Michael H and Smythson.
After moving to London in 2006, Úna completed an MA in Fashion Artefact at the Cordwainers department of London College of Fashion. Her work has since gained a significant amount of interest throughout the fashion, art and craft industries and the collection ‘RE.TREAT’ received the LCF “Off Catwalk Award for Design 2009”. This collection was featured in the New Talents section of Vogue Italia the following September and Úna was subsequently invited by Vogue to present her work at Milano prêt-â-porter during Milan Fashion Week. These leather pieces have been displayed in prestigious exhibitions and catwalk shows in Milan, Cologne, Vienna, London and Kilkenny and received two Crafts Council of Ireland awards and two RDS awards.
Úna has been shortlisted for several more competitions and awards including the ‘ITS #Eight’ (2009), the ‘Institute of Designers in Ireland’ Student Award (2009), The ‘176/ Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize’ (2009) and ‘The Golden Fleece Award’ (2010).
Capturing the interest of photographers such as Nick Knight, David Bailey and Richard Burbridge, and stylists like Patti Wilson, Nicola Formichetti, Charlotte Stockdale and Robbie Spencer, Úna’s work has appeared in the pages of high fashion magazines Vogue Italia, i-D, Dazed and Confused, V Man, Dolce Vita, Numero, Zink, Haute and Vixen. Having already dressed fashion icons Daphne Guinness, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera, Úna’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection is comprised of fourteen more accessible pieces such as handbags and cinch belts using her signature construction technique.
